- He was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 26, 1928, and earned his Bachelors and Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1950 and 1957 respectively. Martin Cooper, prior to his employment with Motorola in 1954, served in the Navy for 4 years, working on destroyers, and on submarines. He had also worked for a short time with another telecommunications company, before his historic association with Motorola.
- Martin Cooper earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology which also awarded him an honorary doctorate and on whose board he is a lifetime trustee. He has received numerous awards and honors including the Prince of Asturias prize, the IEEE Centennial Medal, and a Webbing lifetime contribution award.

- Cooper was also the CEO and founder of Array Comm, a company that works on smart antenna technology and wireless networks, and was the corporate director of Research and Development for Motorola. Cooper has co-founded numerous successful communications companies with his wife and business partner Arlene Harris; also known as the "First Lady of Wireless." He is currently co-founder and Chairman of Dyna LLC, in Del Mar, California.
- Cooper grew up in Chicago and earned a degree in electrical engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. After four years in the navy serving on destroyers and a submarine, he worked for a year at a telecommunications company. Hired by Motorola in 1954, Mr. Cooper worked on developing portable products, including the first portable handheld police radios, made for the Chicago police department in 1967. He then led Motorola's cellular research.
